Manual lymphatic drainage
IMAGE Hull R (2011) Anatomy & Physiology What is manual lymphatic drainage (MLD)MLD is a gentle, flowing rhythmic massage that aims to promote optimal functioning of the lymphatic system, by stimulating the movement of lymph fluid through the lymph vessels.
What are the benefits of MLD?
The main functions of the lymphatic system are to drain excess fluid from the tissues, remove waste and protect against infection.
In many of us, the lymphatic system can become sluggish. This may be due to many factors such as not drinking enough fluid, eating highly processed foods, sedentary lifestyle etc. This can lead to a build-up of waste products, less energy and puffiness, especially around the face/neck. MLD can help with detoxification, improving energy, building immunity and improved vitality and appearance. In some cases, lymphatic vessels/nodes in the body may become damaged, obstructed or removed, for example, due to surgery. This may result in a build-up of fluid and swelling in a specific area. MLD encourages improved circulation by collection of the excess fluid, returning it to the bloodstream via undamaged lymph vessels, resulting in reduced swelling. What conditions can it help with?Any conditions that are caused by a comprised lymphatic system may benefit from MLD. For example, swelling/puffiness, regular colds/flus/low immunity, low energy, sinus congestion, pre/post surgery, stress etc.
What does a treatment involve?
Lymph vessels and nodes sit just beneath the skin’s surface. They carry fluid which eventually reaches two main channels (left and right thoracic ducts) to be emptied into the subclavian veins (bloodstream). Once in the bloodstream, the kidneys filter the fluid before it exits the body as urine.
Therefore, the techniques involve a very light pressure, with gentle strokes, directing lymph towards the nearest lymph nodes around the body including neck, arms, underarms, legs, groin, abdomen, head, face. The collarbone area and chest are also included to encourage drainage. It is very relaxing and most clients fall asleep during the treatment. It is important to take rest and drink lots of fluid after a treatment. |
